UP: The expenditure cap for candidates in the upcoming rural and urban local body elections in the state has been raised by the Uttar Pradesh Election Commission.
The district administrations have received a letter from Joint Election Commissioner Sudha Verma advising them of the increased election spending cap.
The cost of running for mayor, municipality, and nagar panchayat president has gone up. The enrollment fee and security deposit have also gone up in tandem with this.
This is the updated expense list:
- The candidates for mayor in municipal corporations with 80 or more wards may spend up to Rs 40 lakh. The maximum expenditure allowed during the most recent election was Rs 25 lakhs.
- Candidates will now be able to spend Rs 35 lakhs—an increase from Rs 20 lakhs—in wards with less than 80 voters.
- The maximum amount of money that candidates for municipal councillor positions may spend on the election is now Rs 3 lakh, up from Rs 2.5 lakh previously.

- The spending cap for the position of president has increased from Rs. 6 lakhs to Rs. 9 lakhs in municipalities with 25 to 40 wards.
The candidates for the position of president will now be entitled to spend Rs 12 lakhs instead of Rs 8 lakh in municipalities with between 41 and 55 wards. - Significantly, the maximum amount that can be spent on elections has been raised for candidates running for president and member of nagar panchayat. The maximum amount that can be spent on elections for the position of president has been increased from Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh, while the maximum amount that can be spent on elections for members has been set at Rs 50,000 from Rs 30,000 previously.
- Both the registration fee and the security deposit have gone up. The security deposit is set at Rs 12,000 and the nomination fee for the mayor candidate in the general category is Rs 1000. The security deposit is Rs 6,000, while the enrollment cost for the reserved category is Rs 500. The nomination fee and security deposit for general category candidates for municipal councillor positions are each worth Rs. 400. The security deposit for the restricted category is Rs 1,250, while the registration cost is Rs 200.
- There will be an 8,000 rupee security deposit and a 500 rupee nomination fee for candidates in the general category running for municipality president. The enrollment fee and security deposit for candidates from the reserved category will each be Rs 250 and Rs 4,000, respectively.
- Rs 200 is the nomination fee and Rs 2,000 is the security deposit for general category candidates running for municipality member positions. The nomination fee for candidates in the reserved category is Rs. 100, while the security deposit is Rs. 1000.
- The nomination price for general category candidates running for Nagar Panchayat President is Rs 250, while the security deposit is Rs 5,000. The nomination fee and security deposit for candidates in the reserved category are each Rs 125 and Rs 2,500, respectively. The registration fee for general candidates for the member seat is Rs 100, and the security deposit is Rs 2,000. The nomination cost is Rs 50, while the security deposit is Rs 1,000 for candidates in the reserved category.
The report is being anticipated at the commission level, according to the Joint Election Commissioner, following the reorganisation and delineation of wards in municipal organisations. The job of revising the voter list will begin after receipt of this report.

On January 5, 2024, the current board’s term in the municipal bodies comes to an end. Elections are scheduled to take place in this respect in November and December.
