Urbanisation takes its toll! 10 rivers dry up in Aligarh, none left now

Aligarh: Once upon a time, 10 rivers used to flow through the boundary of Aligarh. Their water used to reach the fields and barns. The crops flourished due to irrigation. But most of the rivers have ceased to exist due to environmental changes. Some have fallen prey to illegal occupations. Many water sources have also lost their existence. The occupation of Lal Diggi Talab in the metropolis is a vivid example of this. The Habitat Center building has been erected in the lap of this pond.

Global warming is a major issue

Avnish Kumar Singh, Professor of Geography at DS College, stated that “Global warming is a major issue that affects not only our country but the entire world. This has also affected Aligarh. Fuel combustion in countless vehicles, refrigerators, and factories emits smoke and polluting elements throughout the city, and the use of air conditioners contributes to global warming. This is not just an Aligarh problem. This disaster can be avoided if the haphazard and blind race of urbanisation is halted.”

Public awareness is must needed

Hundreds of small and large factories in the city have a more lethal effect on global warming. Control over suppression of natural gifts by government machinery equipped with neoliberal policies, strict adherence to environmental protection regulations, and public awareness are the only ways to end this terrible crisis, which appears improbable in light of the current situation.

Climate change impacts on the cotton crop

Dr. PK Sharma, former Head of Geology at DS College, stated that “Climate change will have a greater impact on the cotton crop in Aligarh and surrounding areas. Actually, when the crop requires sunlight, rain, or cold, these things occur, and the crop is bound to suffer as a result. The most important reason for this is climate change. Maximum temperature, minimum temperature, mean temperature, difference between maximum and minimum temperature, morning humidity, evening humidity difference, and rainfall. It has an impact on the crop.”
