The Boatman Family of Arail, Prayagraj

The Mahar family, hailing from Arail in Naini, Prayagraj, has been in the boating business for generations. However, this year’s Maha Kumbh brought them unprecedented success. With a fleet of over 100 boats, the family operated non-stop throughout the 45-day-long event, ferrying devotees across the holy rivers.

Their earnings were so astonishing that even UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath mentioned them in the state assembly. According to CM Yogi, the family owned 130 boats, and their total earnings during the Maha Kumbh reached ₹30 crore, averaging about ₹23 lakh per boat. This means each boat earned around ₹50,000 to ₹52,000 per day.

Boatmen Witness Historic Earnings

The Mahar family wasn’t alone in reaping the benefits of Maha Kumbh. The boating industry flourished, with many boatmen experiencing record-high incomes. The family employed additional boats from nearby regions to meet the demand, ensuring that no devotee was left stranded.

One of the family members, Shuklawati, expressed gratitude towards the Yogi-Modi government, stating that this was the first time boatmen were recognized and respected for their role in such a grand event.

Taxation & Total Earnings Discussion

Following the revelation of their earnings, discussions have now turned towards the tax implications. CM Yogi remarked that while ₹30 crore was the net savings, the total earnings were likely even higher. However, after deducting operational costs, salaries, and maintenance expenses, the final taxable income would be determined.
