Vaishno Devi Landslide, August 26, 2025 – Four people are known to have died due to the Vaishno Devi Landslide on the Trikuta Hills route, while a part of the Jammu-Srinagar highway has been affected by the flood, and a complete ban on the shrine route has been imposed, the Jammu administration declared. The incident of the disaster occurred in the middle of the storm, with many devotees visiting the holy shrine.
Highway Failure and Shrine Route Shut Off
Part of the landslide was sufficient to destroy the road, trap hundreds of cars, and block emergency routes. The pilgrims who were already on their way were immediately stopped. The officials announced an order of prohibition of the route until further notice.
Dead and Injured People List
At least four lives were lost, and several were wounded in the event that happened. Some victims were trapped under a pile of debris, while others were caught by flash floods caused by the heavy rains. Police, paramilitary, and State Disaster Response teams helicopter to the spot and start rescue operations despite continuous rainfall.
Relief Measures and Rescue Operations
Rescue teams undertook the clearing of impacted areas from rocks and the restoration of the essential roads throughout the night. The officials said that they have deployed the earth-moving machines; however, the work is hampered due to the rain that continues.
The stranded pilgrims have been given shelter, and distribution of food, water, and medicine has been carried out. The authorities have appealed to the Yatis to let the journey remain untaken till the weather clears.
Warnings of Weather
The weather department has issued an alert indicating heavy rains are likely to continue for up to 48 hours in the region. Instead of just one emergency call center, several emergency call centers are in place in different districts to quickly respond to the calls. People who live in the area have been warned not to travel to the hills or other dangerous places where landslides are highly likely to occur. Officials stated that these few days have been really heavy showers piling up water in the soil and deteriorating the soil condition in the terrain, thereby causing more unstable places in this area that are waiting to slide down into valleys.
