Indian Railways is set to redefine overnight train travel with the upcoming Vande Bharat Sleeper Train, a high-speed, long-distance variant of the popular Vande Bharat Express. With 12 Vande Bharat Sleeper trains planned for launch in 2026, the project marks a major upgrade in India’s night travel ecosystem, focusing on speed, comfort, safety, and reliability.
Unlike conventional overnight trains, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express is being designed to offer a waiting-list-free and RAC-free travel experience, a feature that is expected to significantly reduce passenger inconvenience, especially during peak travel seasons.
Vande Bharat Sleeper Train: Routes and Regional Focus
According to officials, multiple routes are under consideration, with special emphasis on Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, given their high passenger demand and long intercity travel distances. These sleeper trains are likely to connect major metros and state capitals across north, south, and central India, offering faster alternatives to existing Rajdhani and Duronto services. More routes are expected to be announced in phases as rakes are inducted.
Expected Fares
While Indian Railways has not officially released the final fare structure, sources indicate that Vande Bharat Sleeper fares may be priced slightly higher than Rajdhani Express trains, reflecting premium services and modern amenities. However, officials have emphasized that fares will remain competitive and value-driven to ensure affordability for regular long-distance travelers.
Key Features and Facilities
The Vande Bharat Sleeper trains will feature fully air-conditioned sleeper and AC coach configurations, advanced suspension systems, automatic doors, improved noise insulation, and modern toilets. Passenger safety is being enhanced through Kavach collision avoidance systems, CCTV surveillance, fire detection technology, and centralized monitoring.
Comfort upgrades include ergonomic berths, ambient lighting, charging points at every seat, smart climate control, and improved bedding quality, making overnight journeys smoother and more restful.
Speed and Technology
Built for higher speeds than conventional sleeper trains, the Vande Bharat Sleeper is expected to run at 160 kmph where track conditions permit, significantly cutting travel time on long routes. The trains are being manufactured under the Make in India initiative, strengthening domestic rail production capabilities.
A New Era of Night Travel
With no waiting list stress, faster connectivity, and airline-like comfort on rails, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is poised to become a game-changer for interstate night travel. As Indian Railways expands the network in 2026, passengers can expect a safer, more predictable, and premium overnight travel experience across states.
