Mamta Banerjee: The resignation of C. V. Ananda Bose on March 5, 2026, has sparked a political storm in West Bengal ahead of the assembly elections. For months, relations between the Raj Bhavan and the state government had been marked by visible friction over administrative decisions and constitutional roles. In this charged atmosphere.

Bose said the move was a “conscious decision,” also he described his tenure as a “game played according to constitutional rules” and said that he had “completed his innings with dignity.”

The resignation’s timing has gotten a lot of political attention because it happened just a few months before the important West Bengal Assembly elections. This makes the situation even more sensitive in the state’s political scene.

Mamata Banerjee Expresses Shock, Demands Explanation From Centre

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reacted strongly to the sudden resignation and demanded clarification from the central government. She said the move was surprising because Bose still had several years left in his constitutional tenure.

Banerjee questioned whether Bose had actually resigned voluntarily or if he had been “removed” by the Centre. She also pointed out that Bose was reportedly called to Delhi abruptly instead of proceeding with a planned visit to North Bengal, where he was expected to meet the President.

The Chief Minister further criticised the Union government, suggesting that the Centre might be planning to appoint a “yes man” as the next Governor. Banerjee also accused Union Home Minister Amit Shah of not consulting the state government regarding the selection of the new Governor.

Bose Breaks Silence, Says He Is Moving to Kerala for New Role

After reaching Delhi, Bose briefly addressed the media at Kolkata airport on March 8, using a metaphor to explain his decision. He said that in any game, it is important to know “when the game ends and what the rules of the game are.”

Later, in a message posted on social media platform X, Bose said he would be moving to Kerala to contribute to the broader vision of “Viksit Bharat.” However, he again avoided giving a detailed explanation for stepping down from the gubernatorial post.
