AI to Replace Government Jobs: According to recent research, artificial intelligence have the potential to replace more than 84% of routine government tasks. The Alan Turing Institute researchers discovered that 201 UK services that entail decisions and information exchanges between the government and citizens can be automated to save time. As mentioned in the report, passport processing and voter registration are two examples of tasks that can be completely automated.
The research found that for every minute AI-assisted cut per transaction, hundreds of thousands of hours of manual labour by human workers will be saved. Additionally, automation will free up authorities from never-ending paperwork so they can interact with the public more.
What Exactly Does the Research Says?
“AI has enormous potential to help governments become more responsive, efficient and fair. Even if AI could save one minute per transaction, that would be the equivalent of hundreds of thousands of hours of labour saved each year,” Dr Jonathan Bright, head of AI for public services and online safety at The Alan Turing Institute, said about the study.
“Achieving responsible and accurate automation with AI will require a lot of work. However, the huge benefit justifies the investment needed,” he added.
The research, which was focused on the operations of the UK government, discovered that 143 million intricate yet repeated transactions made up the services that had the potential to be automated in the government bodies.
“Overall, our work presents a novel perspective on the structure and functioning of modern government, and how it might evolve in the age of artificial intelligence, the study mentions.
AI to Replace Government Jobs: What Experts Say?
The chief of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, stated in January that although AI presents a “tremendous opportunity” to increase declining productivity levels and spur global development, it also poses concerns to job security globally. She also added that AI will hurt around 60 per cent of jobs in the advanced economies in the future.
