Apple is reportedly working on its thinnest smartphone in years, the iPhone 17 Air, which could set a new benchmark for slimness in the industry. According to a recent leak, the device may measure just 5.5mm in thickness, making it 0.34mm thinner than the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge—Samsung’s upcoming flagship expected to launch next month.
iPhone 17 Air: Expected Dimensions and Display
The leak, shared by tipster Ice Universe (@UniverseIce) on X (formerly Twitter), suggests that the iPhone 17 Air will have the same length, width, and display size as the iPhone 17 Pro Max. If true, this means the device will be 163mm in height and 77.6mm in width, aligning with the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
Other expected specifications include a 6.9-inch LTPO AMOLED display, slightly larger than the iPhone 16 Plus’s 6.7-inch screen. Additionally, the iPhone 17 Air and iPhone 17 Pro Max may feature ultra-slim bezels similar to the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
What This Means for Apple's Lineup
If these leaks hold true, the iPhone 17 Air could mark a significant shift in Apple's design strategy, possibly introducing a new category of ultra-thin premium iPhones. The focus on slimness could appeal to users looking for a sleeker, more lightweight device while maintaining the high-end display technology seen in recent Pro models.
Apple is expected to officially unveil the iPhone 17 series in late 2025, with more details likely to surface in the coming months.
The tipster's claim indicates that the iPhone 17 Air will sport a 6.9-inch LTPO AMOLED display, 0.2mm larger than the handset it is expected to replace later this year — the iPhone 16 Plus. The leaker says that the iPhone 17 Air and iPhone 17 Pro Max will sport the same slim display bezels as the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
