Apple Joins Layoff Trend Following Google, Amazon, and Meta?

Apple: After avoiding layoffs for a while, Apple has already started to fire workers. According to the most recent report, Apple has started firing members of its retail division. The cuts are anticipated to be "masively smaller size" than those seen by other major tech companies like Google, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft, but nonetheless significant for Apple, according to reports. Recall that Google had laid off about 12,000 workers, with Amazon leading the way with 27,000, Meta coming in close behind with about 21,000, and Microsoft with about 10,000.

Business is offering up to four months of severance pay to employees

According to the reports, Apple has taken action to enhance its business practises. The purpose of the layoffs was not to reduce expenses. Both sources claim that the layoffs are internal, albeit it is not yet known how many workers would be impacted. The affected workers are from the department in charge of setting up and managing Apple's retail locations. After being given until the end of the week to apply for other employment, the business is offering up to four months of severance pay to employees who are unable to find new opportunities within Apple. Since the epidemic began, there have been no full-time layoffs at Apple prior to this one.

Company's layoffs were relatively minor in scope

By avoiding significant employment losses, Apple has typically set itself apart from other major IT businesses. Layoffs are the company's "final resort," according to CEO Tim Cook. Apple has, however, been cutting expenses in other ways, such as by firing contractors, leaving some positions open, deferring bonuses, limiting hiring, cutting travel spending, and delaying projects. This information is released at a time when numerous other tech firms have made big job layoffs in response to the pandemic's negative economic effects. Apple can no longer assert that it has never had to lay off employees, despite the fact that the company's layoffs were relatively minor in scope.
