Artificial Intelligence: Experts unite to pause AI experiments before it harms Humanity, Signed by Elon Musk and 1000+ Others

Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence: Elon Musk and a group of experts and executives in the field of artificial intelligence are asking for a break of six months in the development of systems that are more advanced than OpenAI’s latest GPT-4. They have written an open letter highlighting the potential risks to society and humanity if such technology is developed without proper precautions.

Experts write for Artificial Intelligence’s risks

More than 1,000 people, including Musk, signed the letter from the nonprofit Future of Life Institute, which urged a halt on the development of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) until standardised safety guidelines for such systems are established, enacted, and independently audited. The letter read, “Powerful AI systems should be developed only once we are confident that their effects will be positive and their risks will be manageable.”

The letter highlighted the threats posed to society and civilization by human-competitive AI systems, including potential for political and economic instability, and encouraged developers to collaborate with authorities and policymakers on governance and regulatory frameworks. According to a spokesman for Future of Life, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has not signed the letter.

Emad Mostaque, the CEO of Stability AI, researchers from Alphabet-owned DeepMind, and AI pioneers Yoshua Bengio and Stuart Russell were co-signatories.

The Future of Life Institute is principally funded by the Musk Foundation, together with the Silicon Valley Community Foundation and the London-based effective altruism organisation Founders Pledge, as per the European Union’s transparency register.

Why are experts concerned about AI?

The concerns come as EU police agency Europol on Monday joined a chorus of moral and legal worries over cutting-edge AI like ChatGPT, warning people about the potential abuse of the system in phishing efforts, misinformation, and cybercrime. Musk has been open about his worries regarding AI, which his company Tesla, is utilising for an autopilot system.

Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which was released last year, has pushed competitors to speed up the development of similar big language models and businesses to incorporate generative AI models into their products.
