The Dark Side of AI: Though beneficial to many industries, artificial intelligence (AI) is not without its drawbacks, which are coming to light more and more. Misuse cases are increasing, with disastrous results for both people and businesses. The production of deep fakes is one of the scariest applications of AI technology in recent years. These edited recordings or pictures, which are frequently used to harass and degrade women, have given rise to a plethora of moral and legal dilemmas.

The Dark Side of AI

Again highlighting AI’s “deepfake” issue is the recently viral “Rashmika Mandanna video” and the ensuing social media concern after it was revealed to be a deepfake of British-Indian influencer Zara Patel.

Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the Minister of Electronics and Information Technology of India, responded to the controversy on X, saying, “Deepfakes are the latest and even more dangerous and damaging form of misinformation and needs to be dealt with by platforms”. after a number of celebrities, including actor Amitabh Bachchan, voiced their concerns about the issue, with the latter terms it “a strong case for legal.”

Subsequently, the government released a directive in this area, requiring social media companies to detect and eliminate any fake content “within 36 hours” of a report being made.

Intricate and sophisticated cyberattacks have also been carried out using AI as a weapon. Misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) has led to an increase in the sophistication and difficulty of preventing spear phishing, denial of service (DoS), and swarm attacks.

Conclusion

To sum up, as artificial intelligence becomes more and more ingrained in our daily lives, it is critical to recognise the possible misuse of this technology. In order to protect people and businesses from the potential risks of artificial intelligence (AI), we must adapt our policies as we continue to reap its benefits.
