Bard: Google has recently launched its experimental conversation AI service, Bard, as it aims to compete with the popular chatbot, ChatGPT, developed by Microsoft-backed firm OpenAI. According to Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai in a blog post, the service will initially be available to a select group of "trusted testers" before being made public in the coming weeks.
Google facing competition from ChatGPT
In a recent earnings conference call, Pichai hinted at the launch of Bard, stating that consumers will be able to use its language models as a supplement to search. This unveiling of Bard comes at a time when Google's dominant search business is facing competition from Microsoft, which has invested $10 billion in OpenAI and plans to integrate artificial intelligence into its software products, including Bing, a rival to Google's search engine.
Similar to ChatGPT, Bard will provide comprehensive responses to user requests such as "compare two Oscar-nominated films", or "suggest lunch ideas based on what's in your fridge".
Bard may have an advantage in addressing questions about current events as ChatGPT's knowledge is limited to information available on the internet until 2021. Pichai stated in the blog post that Bard "leverages information from the web to provide up-to-date and high-quality responses".
Sundar added, "Bard can be an outlet for creativity, and a launchpad for curiosity, helping you to explain new discoveries from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to a 9-year-old, or learn more about the best strikers in football right now."
Sundar Pichai speaks on increasing need of AI
Bard is fueled by LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications), a cutting-edge language model developed and launched by Google in 2021. According to Pichai, they will initially release a lighter version of LaMDA-powered Bard that requires less computing power, allowing for wider accessibility and more opportunities for user feedback.
Additionally, Google is also enabling developers to build upon their AI models with the release of their Generative Language API next month. This will allow individuals, creators, and businesses to test the capabilities of LaMDA and other language models.
Pichai expressed the company's vision to create a comprehensive set of tools and APIs that make it simple for others to develop innovative AI applications. He emphasized the company's commitment to AI, citing its transformation around the technology six years ago and its ongoing use to enhance their search engine. With more and more users seeking in-depth insights and understanding on Google, AI has become increasingly essential in providing the necessary information without extensive effort.
