Free the nipple: A new report has suggested Facebook and Instagram’s parent company Meta has decided to lift ban on the strict rule of image featuring breasts. The development comes as a big win for the decade-long free the nipple campaign.

Meta calls for an overhaul

According to a report by The Guardian, Meta’s oversight board has invited an overhaul to the company’s rule which allows men to post bare chested men but not women.

On January 17, the oversight board recommended that Meta needs to change its adult nudity and sexual activity community standard "so that it is governed by clear criteria that respect international human rights standards".

The board says that Meta should "define clear, objective, rights-respecting criteria" when it comes to moderating nudity "so that all people are treated in a manner consistent with international human rights standards".

In 2018, CEO Mark Zuckerburg tried, while justifying Meta's action said, "It's easier to build an AI system to detect a nipple than what is hate speech."

Meta's nudity policy

Meta's strict nudity policy has been under radar for quite some time now. In 2020, the topic attracted heated debate due to its stringent guidelines for limiting the exposure of women's nipples. The rule has mostly affected breastfeeding women who often find themselves censored on Facebook and Instagram.

Free the Nipple movement which began in 2000 in an attempt to de-sexualize the image of breasts, gained traction in 2012 after Facebook removed clips from Lina Esco's documentary Free the Nipple.

The decision was heavily criticised, with protests breaking out at Facebook headquarters at the time, demanding that women have the right to bare their breasts on social media if they so choose.
