Caller ID: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has suggested the implementation of the Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) Supplementary Service throughout the Indian telecoms network in an effort to improve caller identification and reduce spam calls.
TRAI’s new recommendation
TRAI has provided the Centre with a technical model for the rollout of caller identification, and the regulatory agency has advised that the government issue directives requiring all telecoms to begin the service by a specific time. When a call is received in India, the suggested CNAP model will display the name that the phone number was registered under with the telecom provider. Users will probably be able to use the service as an on-request function.
Following the introduction of the service by DoT in March 2022, Trai released a consultation paper for CNAP in November 2022. The final suggestions are now available, having been the subject of a consultation in March of last year.
How will the feature work?
The suggestions’ release moves the implementation of default caller ID services one step closer to reality. When the feature launches, it will probably face competition from caller identification services like Truecaller, which is developing a consumer subscription and ad-supported business model.
Since consumers would be able to view the caller’s name before answering, it is anticipated that this initiative will lessen the frequency of spam calls.
