Google: It has been reported that Google deleted 16 apps from its Play Store because these apps caused Android smartphones to use more data and run down their batteries more quickly.
The security firm that found these bugs says that the removed apps were committing ad fraud by redirecting to web pages in the background to click on ads while pretending to be real users. The security firm says the apps had 20 million downloads before they were taken off the store. Ars Technica says that Google removed 16 apps from its Play Store after McAfee found them to be harmful. The app that was removed was a "utility" app. According to McAfee, utility apps do simple things like letting users scan a QR code and go to the website it links to, turn on the device's flashlight, or do as simple a job as a currency converter or calculator. Google has removed the 16 useful apps from its Play Store.

When these apps came out, McAfee found that they would automatically download code, get alerts to access websites without telling the user, and click on links and ads. This would be an example of ad fraud because it would fake being a real user to get more people to interact with the ads.
