Google plans to turn YouTube into an e-commerce giant

We often come across various goods on YouTube while watching videos. Soon, these products will be available for viewing for sale on YouTube itself.

The video viewing site is currently testing features that will allow users to buy products directly on the platform. The company has asked creators to use its software to tag and track products featured in the clips.

The data will have links directed t o analytics and shopping tools from parent Google.

Be it gaming, photography or fashion, many channels use advertisements link on YouTube as a medium to earn extra money.

If you are someone who visits YouTube often, you must have come across Amazon referral link provided in video's description. Now of the latest plan is materialised, you would be able to purchase the product from link right then and right there on YouTube.

The company is currently testing features with Shopify Inc to integrate methods to sell items through YouTube directly.

If successful, this move by Google can be a threat to leadin e-commerce websites including Amazon, Alibaba and Flipkart.

“YouTube is one of the least utilized assets,” said Andy Ellwood, president of e-commerce startup Basket. “If they decided they want to invest in it, it’s a huge opportunity for them.”

Alphabet Inc.’s Google has launched multiple attempts at online commerce, and have been successful to a limit. However, until now, the company has focused on promoting products and generating revenue by ads rather than selling itself.
