India: Government Issues Major Regulation To Block Stolen And Fake Smartphones. Full Details Here

India: Real issues with the Indian mobile sector include blackmarketing, bogus IMEI numbers, phone thefts, and phone tampering. The government has released new regulations in an effort to keep these problems under control in the nation. Beginning January 1, 2023, all mobile phone makers are required by the new regulations to register the IMEI number of each device made in India with the Indian Counterfeit Device Restriction (ICDR) portal.

What does official notification states?

The notification from the Department of Telecommunications states that “the importer shall register the international mobile equipment identity number of the mobile phone imported in India for sale, testing, research, or any other purpose with the Indian Counterfeit Device Restriction portal (https://icdr.ceir.gov.in) of the Government of India before importing the mobile phone into the country” reads the official government notification.

Millions of feature phones and smartphones in the nation have IMEI numbers that are bogus or even duplicates. The Meerut Police discovered more than 13,000 Vivo phones with the identical IMEI number in June 2020. In the past, there have also been reports of similar instances. According to the new regulations, each phone made in the nation must have an identifiable IMEI number that can be monitored online. Imported phones, even the most expensive Samsung and Apple cellphones, will be subject to the rule.

What does IMEI stand for?

International Mobile Equipment Identity is what IMEI stands for. It is a distinctive number used to identify satellite phones as well as GSM, WCDMA, and iDEN mobile phones. Every phone has a unique IMEI number, however dual SIM phones have two unique IMEI numbers. In cases of theft, it is simpler to locate the phone using the IMEI number.

The phone’s serial number can be used to confirm the phone’s legitimacy. A phone is phoney if it lacks an IMEI number. Always check the IMEI number of the smartphone before making a purchase. Use your phone to dial *#06# to check your IMEI number.

In order to import mobile devices through different customs ports, the government implemented the Indian Counterfeit Device Restriction in 2021.
