Indian Government bans over 100 Chinese websites

These websites have been recognised by the I4C National Cybercrime Threat Analytics Unit (NCTAU) as facilitators of organised investment and task-based part-time job frauds. The website bans were implemented by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, in accordance with the Information Technology Act of 2000.

A statement released by the MHA claims that these websites, run by foreign actors, used chat messengers, digital ads, and mule or rented accounts to commit organised and task-based economic crimes relating to unlawful investments.

How did they work?

These scams usually target women, young people without jobs looking for part-time work, and retired employees. The culprits use phrases like "Ghar baithe job" and "Ghar baithe kamayi kaise karen" from overseas marketers to launch targeted digital ads on platforms like Google and Meta.

After viewing the advertisement, victims receive calls from agents on Telegram and WhatsApp, persuading them to complete tasks like rating maps, videos, and subscribing. Victims are then persuaded to make larger investments in the hopes of earning larger profits. They are duped financially, nevertheless, since their deposits are frozen once they make a sizable deposit.

How to stay safe?

  • Learn the methods that crooks typically employ. When someone understands the game they are playing, they can seldom fool anyone.
  • Investigate individuals or groups that get in touch with you. Consider their intentions before responding to anyone requesting money, whether it's a recruiter on LinkedIn, a possible partner on a dating site, or a representative of a charity.
  • Never compromise the security of your personal data. Anyone requesting your personal information or financial data should always be viewed with extreme caution.
