Car Spy: If your car was manufactured within the previous several years, you're probably driving around in a data-gathering machine that may collect sensitive personal information such as your race, weight, and sexual activity. Read on to learn more.
According to new research from the Mozilla Foundation, cars have an unparalleled ability to spy on you and sell your data.
Mozilla examined the top 25 automakers, including Ford, Toyota, and Tesla. They all failed to meet Mozilla's privacy guidelines by gathering excessive amounts of personal information and using it for purposes other than vehicle management.
Out of the 25 car brands:
100% got the foundation's privacy not included tag.
84% sell or share the collected data.
56% share the data with law enforcement on an informal request.
Microphones, cameras, and phones that drivers link to their automobiles are all used to collect data in modern cars. Manufacturers may also collect data via their applications and websites, which they may subsequently sell or share with third parties.
“Many people think of their car as a private space, somewhere to call your doctor, have a personal conversation with your kid on the way to school, cry your eyes out over a break-up, or drive places you might not want the world to know about,” said Jen Caltrider, program director of the *Privacy Not Included project, in a press release. “But that perception no longer matches reality. All new cars today are privacy nightmares on wheels that collect huge amounts of personal information.”
