AI Ghost Staff: Google, Amazon, and Microsoft have large stakes in the artificial intelligence (AI) race. These companies pay thousands of unseen contract workers to train, correct, and enhance algorithms in order to produce generative AI tools, which generate answers to text queries in the form of text, photographs, and even movies. The finished result is then displayed to end customers in a matter of seconds. These 'trainers' are allegedly underpaid, harried, and overworked by the firms who have invested billions in building their AI model. According to Bloomberg, US lawmakers have now demanded leading IT businesses to provide facts about their "ghost work."

In a letter to the CEOs of nine companies, a group of lawmakers led by Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey, Washington Representative Pramila Jayapal, and former presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren Wrote, “Despite the essential nature of this work, millions of data workers around the world perform these stressful tasks under constant surveillance, with low wages and no benefits. Workers are expected to screen out dangerous chatbot answers, but they may have little time to assess an answer’s safety. Data workers are often given scant training or supervision, which can result in the introduction of bias. Tech companies must not build AI on the backs of exploited workers.”
The lawmakers interrogate the executives extensively about their data workforces, including their capacity to take breaks, appeal suspensions, or obtain mental health support when exposed to traumatising content.
