New Government Advisory on Experimental AI Models, Check What’s Changed

New Advisory from the government removes the requirement to obtain its permission for experimental AI models, Details

AI: The ministry of electronics and IT (MeitY) withdrew the previous requirement that any untested or unstable AI models launched in the nation require government approval in a fresh alert sent to platforms on Friday. Read on to know more.

New AI Advisory from the government

The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) has repealed the previous mandate that the government provide its approval before introducing any unproven or untrustworthy AI models in the nation, in response to complaints from experts and AI startups.

When distributing experimental AI models and software to the public, the platforms are urged to declare them as “under testing.” A user consent mechanism has also been recommended for them to notify users of any potential incorrect results that the generative AI model might produce.

MeitY sent an advisory to all intermediaries on March 1st, asking them to notify the government and mark their platforms as “under testing” before opening them to the public. The alert was directed at intermediaries utilising artificial intelligence (AI) models, software, or algorithms.

What has been changed?

Other than eliminating the need to obtain approval from the government before launching models, the updated advice hasn’t changed much other than its wording, which has been softened. FE was shown a copy of the updated advice.

The government’s updated recommendation was released in response to criticism of the previous one from numerous academics and AI businesses. Large language model screening of this kind has angered startups, who call the process regressive and likely to stifle innovation. The warning was released in response to many reports of skewed and false information from generative AI platforms’ experimental models in recent days.

In order to facilitate the identification of the source of any disinformation or deepfakes, the government has also directed intermediaries to devise a method for integrating metadata or a distinct identifying code into all synthetic content produced on their platforms. It was previously required of corporations to provide an action-taken report within 15 days; however, platforms are now expected to comply “with immediate effect” as a result of a revised advice.
