Google: American technology titan Google has added a new function for Chrome users. Following a testing phase in October, Google has this week made "passkeys" accessible to Chroma users. Passkeys are a far safer alternative to passwords and other phishable forms of authentication.
Google added Passkey functionality to Chrome Canary, the beta version of Chrome that enables advanced users to test out new features, back in October. The business has now declared that Chrome v108, the most recent stable version, will also receive it. According to Google's most recent blog, "We're enabling passkeys on Windows 11, macOS, and Android with the latest version of Chrome." You might choose to utilise a passkey from your nearby iOS or Android mobile device on your desktop in the meanwhile.

How does Google passkeys work?
Chrome will prompt you to choose between using a passkey or a password to sign in to a supported website if the passkey update has reached your device. The former will need a fingerprint or facial unlock for screen lock authentication.
The next development in secure logins is passkeys. Although a good password is the first line of defence against data breaches, it is possible for it to be stolen from either the server end or from you. Passkeys eliminate these weaknesses. The user's device is given a special passkey called the private key in place of having two versions of the identical password—one with the user and one with the server. The server also maintains a second key known as the public key. The two cooperate to enable user authentication for compatible websites and applications.
If a server breach occurs, the hacker won't have access to your private key. Passkeys can't be phished from the user's perspective either because they need the user's phone to be present.
Are passkey better?
The fact that passkeys require no remembering is likely their greatest benefit. When you need a different password for each website or service, it might be challenging to remember them. Password managers can assist with that, but they are not perfect, as has been demonstrated numerous times this year alone.
