Scammer Uses Deepfake Of Ex-IPS Officer for Extortion Scam; Details

Deefake Incident: Another serious incident of Deepfake misuse has taken place with a 76-year-old retired IPS officer in India. The Ex-IPS got trapped in an extortion scheme by an AI-generated deepfake video. The victim was first contacted by a scammer via a video call on Facebook. During the video call, Scammers played a video that included explicit content. Arvind Sharma, the victim disconnected the video call in a fast manner. After a short while, the victim received a WhatsApp video call from an individual clad in a police uniform. The fake police officer tried to leverage the identity of the victim and warned him to file a complaint if he denied his monetary demand. Check out more details below. 

How the Incident Took Place

The scammer accused Arvind Sharma, the victim of soliciting sex online and threatened to expose him to the public if he did not transfer them money. The victim was scared and thought that he was talking to the real policemen on the video call. Fearing the possible repercussions, Arvind Sharma made multiple payments to the scammer totalling around Rs. 74000. Later, the victim realized that he was being scammed and he filed a complaint against the scammers 

Arvind Shama’s daughter reported the incident to police. In an immediate response, police filed an FIR and launched an investigation in collaboration with Cyber Cell. The cyber cell is deeply examining the case and staring at the details such as bank transactions and videos. The responsible authorities are also trying to trace the scammer’s account in collaboration with Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp and Facebook.  

Police Warning 

The police are warning people to be aware of such deepfake incidents and requested them to adopt a preventive stance to avoid such incidents taking place with them. The authorities have also advised people to not hesitate and come forward to report such crimes.
