H-1B Visas Fee Hike: The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has released a comprehensive proposal stating a potential increment in the fee for various immigration services. The sudden shift has shocked the whole tech industry which remains highly reliant on H-1B visas for recruiting skilled foreign workers. The potential fee increase can badly impact the country’s economy as some people are arguing that the increase will put pressure on small companies and stop them from hiring skilled foreign talents. Check out more details below.

Proposed Hike in H-1B Visas Fee

The USCIS has proposed a complete overhaul of its fee structure which includes a significant hike specifically for H-1B visas. The agency has released a 469-page-long document that proposes a  70 per cent increase for H-1B applications increasing the price from USD460 to USD780. Additionally, the online registration fee for H-1B visas would increase by 2050 per cent from USD 10 to USD 215.

USCIS Justifies its Decision

The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) justifies its proposal by saying that it is important to address the budget deficits of the agency and decrease processing times. The agency also argues that the current fee charged for the visas fails to meet the expenses incurred by the USCIS.

Some people have countered the justification of USCIS saying that the reason for the agency’s financial failure is inefficient administrative practices and mismanagement, but not a lack of revenue in the treasury.
