Vaonis Hestia: With little under a week left, a Kickstarter campaign for the first-ever device to transform cellphones into smart telescopes has reached $2 million.
Vaonis Hestia details
The Stellina and Vespera telescope manufacturers, Vaonis, started a Kickstarter campaign last month to fund the creation of their new Hestia system, which takes advantage of smartphone sensors to take pictures of the stars. Despite their great performance, most phones' sensors have small lenses, which limits their ability to be used for astronomy. Hestia enhances this ability by boosting brightness by up to 25 times and sharpness by up to 5 times.
To catch these "deep sky" subjects, you'll need a smartphone that is relatively new and has a better camera, but older models can still take better photos of the moon than ever. Additionally, it can be used to take pictures of the sun. And because of the system of releasable magnets, it might even still function with the most cutting-edge phone you have by the time the next total solar eclipse occurs in 2090. By that time, most likely, we'll all be residing in space, amid the stars.
Vaonis has already produced a variety of smart telescopes, but it used Kickstarter to raise over $4.1 million for the Hestia after setting a $10,000 target. Vaonis anticipates beginning shipping in December, and the campaign finished earlier today.
