“Will Regulate AI To Ensure It Doesn’t Harm Digital Citizens”: Union Minister Rajeev

During a presentation on the progress India has made toward digitisation over the past nine years under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar said that the government will regulate artificial intelligence to ensure that it does not harm “digital citizens.”

“Toxicity and criminality have significantly increased on the internet. We won’t let attempts to harm digital citizens succeed,” he said, pointing out that 120 crore Indians are likely to utilize the internet by 2025, an increase from the current 85 crore.

The minister noted that crimes like doxing—publishing private and identifying information about people online with malice aforethought and without their consent—have been on the rise and that the Center will have to collaborate with state governments on strict regulations to address it because law and order are state concerns.

“There is a boost of digital connectivity in the country, and it’s the vision and mission of the government to ensure safety and security in cyberspace,” he said.

Consultations with stakeholders on the Digital India Bill will begin this month, according to Mr. Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Entrepreneurship, Skill Development, Electronics & Technology. He noted that the new personal data protection bill would also soon be submitted in Parliament.

Under PM Modi’s leadership, India is developing into a reliable manufacturing partner, the minister claimed.

“In the manufacturing sector, we are seeing the emergence of world-class factories, huge investments and the creation of a big number of jobs,” he said.

According to Rajeev Chandrasekhar, India is deploying 5G at the fastest rate because we have a lot of homegrown 5G components.
