X bans over 12 lakh accounts in India for policy violations, Details

X: Between July 26 and August 25, Elon Musk's X Corp. (previously Twitter) banned a record 12,80,107 accounts in India, largely for promoting paedophilia and non-consensual nudity. The micro-blogging network, which is undergoing multiple changes under Musk's leadership, recently named a new ex-CEO, Linda Yaccarino, who also banned 2,307 accounts from its platform for encouraging terrorism in the country.

X bans over 12 lakh accounts

According to X's monthly report in accordance with the new IT Rules, 2021, it received 1,467 complaints from consumers in India during the same time period via its grievance redressal process. X also handled 78 complaints about account bans.

The company said, "We overturned 10 of these account suspensions after reviewing the specifics of the situation. The remaining reported accounts remain suspended.”

The most common complaint from India was about abuse/harassment (1,267), followed by hateful behaviour (62), child sexual exploitation (43), and privacy infringement (27).

Under Elon Musk's leadership, X Corp. has also been attentive to government demands, granting 83% of them the right to restrict or censor content overseas, including in nations such as India and Turkey.
