Yahoo Groups has announced that it will completely shut down in December. Due to less users accessing the web service provider, the company began slow down process last year and will completely be removed from web by December 15, 2020.

Owned by Verizon Media, the Yahoo! company was founded by Jerry Yang and David Filo in 1994 which was later incorporated in 1995.

The company said that the product no longer fits its long-term strategy as the company is focusing on other areas of the business.

“Yahoo Groups has seen a steady decline in usage over the last several years,” Yahoo said in a statement.

“Over that same period, we’ve witnessed unprecedented levels of engagement across our properties as customers seek out premium, trustworthy content.”

Earlier, in February, Yahoo took away online access to discussions and other features apart from simple membership management.

From December 15, users will no longer be able to create new groups. They will neither be able to send or receive emails from Yahoo groups. However, users can still access their Yahoo mail account.

"Beginning December 15, 2020, the Yahoo Groups website will shut down and members will no longer be able to send or receive emails from Yahoo Groups," the company said.

Verizon had bought Yahoo's tottering internet business for a mere $4.8 billion in 2017.

Yahoo Groups was launched in 2001 and by February 2020, it was declared as "world's largest collections of online discussion boards. On Yahoo, users could subscribe to groups, read discussions and share views, photos etc. They could also create polls and get new email notifications of discussions.
