Industrialist Anand Mahindra has entered the ongoing debate on work-life balance, emphasizing the importance of work quality over sheer quantity. His remarks come in response to recent statements by L&T Chairman SN Subrahmanyan, who suggested a 90-hour workweek and questioned the value of leisure time.
At the National Youth Festival in New Delhi, Mahindra stated, "We have to focus on the quality of work, not on the quantity of work. It's not about 40 hours, 70 hours, or 90 hours. What output are you doing?"
He further highlighted the significance of a balanced life enriched by arts, culture, and family time, arguing that such exposure leads to better decision-making and leadership. "You make better decisions when you have a whole brain, when you are informed about arts, culture, that's when you make a good decision," Mahindra explained.
‘मेरी पत्नी बहुत ही अच्छी हैं। मैं उनको देखता रहता हूँ. बहस Quality Of Work पर होनी चाहिए, Quantity पर नहीं’

Addressing his social media presence, Mahindra noted, "I want to make it clear—I’m on X not because I’m lonely. My wife is amazing, and I love spending time with her. I’m not here to make friends. I’m here because people don’t realize how powerful a business tool this is. On one platform, I can get feedback from 11 million people."
These comments were in response to Subrahmanyan's controversial suggestion that employees should work up to 90 hours a week, including Sundays. In a video circulating online, Subrahmanyan remarked, "What do you do sitting at home? How long can you stare at your wife? Come on, get to the office and start working."
Mahindra's perspective has been echoed by other business leaders. Harsh Goenka, chairman of RPG Enterprises, mocked the idea of a 90-hour workweek, stating, "90 hours a week? Why not rename Sunday to ‘Sun-duty’ and make ‘day off’ a mythical concept!" He emphasized that while hard work is essential, it should not come at the expense of personal well-being.
The debate underscores a broader discussion on work-life balance in today's fast-paced corporate environment. Mahindra's emphasis on quality over quantity and the importance of a well-rounded life offers a counter-narrative to the push for longer working hours, highlighting the need for sustainable work practices that value employee well-being alongside productivity.
