The body structure of the rainbow tripod fish is distinct. It uses its long, thin pelvic and pectoral fins, which resemble tripod legs, to perch on the seafloor. The fish can wait for prey while staying motionless and conserving energy because of their tripod-like stance.  Rainbow tripod fish live in the ocean's deep waters, usually between 1,000 and 4,000 meters (3,300 and 13,100 feet) below the surface. Although they have been found in other deep-sea locales, the Atlantic Ocean is where they are most frequently found.

The rainbow tripod fish, like many other deep-sea species, has a bioluminescent lure. At the end of a modified dorsal spine, the fish bears an organ known as an esca that glows. This glowing limb draws in smaller fish and crabs.
