Samrat Cinematics has announced that its highly anticipated biopic, AJEY – The Untold Story of a Yogi, will release in theatres on September 19, 2025. The decision follows the filmmakers’ victory in a legal battle against the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in the Bombay High Court. The court ruled in favour of the makers, allowing the film to be released without any cuts.

AJEY Makers Celebrate BIG Victory Against CBFC

To celebrate, the production team unveiled a new poster featuring Anant Joshi in the lead role. Dressed in saffron robes with a piercing gaze, he embodies both spiritual depth and inner strength.

The poster also showcases the film’s ensemble cast, including Paresh Rawal, Dineshlal Yadav ‘Nirahua’, Ajay Mengi, Rajesh Khattar, Pawan Malhotra, and Garima Vikrant Singh.

Based on Shantanu Gupta’s bestselling book, AJEY tells the story of a man who renounced worldly life and became one of India’s most influential political figures.

Producer Ritu Mengi said, “After the struggle with the CBFC, this verdict is not just a win for our film but for creative freedom itself. We’re glad that the law prevailed above everything, and we are now releasing on 19th September.”

Directed by Ravindra Gautam, the film is produced by Ritu Mengi and written by Dilip Bachchan Jha and Priyank Dubey. The music is composed by Meet Bros, with cinematography by Vishnu Rao and production design by Udai Prakash Singh. Suuraj Sinngh of B-Live Productions serves as associate producer, and AA Films, led by Anil Thadani, will distribute the film widely.

All About The Legal Battle That Delayed Its Release

The controversy began in 2025 when the CBFC initially refused to grant a censor certificate. Filmmakers had applied in June, but the board delayed its decision without explanation. When a decision was finally issued, the CBFC denied certification, citing the need for a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Yogi Adityanath, claiming potential defamation.

Samrat Cinematics challenged this in the Bombay High Court, arguing that demanding an NOC was “unconstitutional and beyond its jurisdiction.” The court noted that the film was based on a publicly available book, The Monk Who Became Chief Minister, which had not caused any issues. It also criticised the CBFC for rejecting the film without viewing it and initially demanding 29 cuts, later reducing this to 21.

After reviewing the film, the court ruled in favour of the filmmakers on August 25, 2025, dismissing CBFC’s objections regarding obscenity and defamation. This cleared the path for the film’s release exactly as the creators intended.
