Kanpur Train Accident: A potentially dangerous situation unfolded in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur district on Sunday when a passenger train hit an LPG cylinder that had been placed on the railway tracks. Fortunately, no passengers were injured in the incident, police reported.
The incident occurred as the Kalindi Express, traveling from Prayagraj to Bhiwani in Haryana, passed through Kanpur’s Shivrajpur area. According to the police, the train’s locomotive pilot spotted the LPG cylinder and other suspicious items on the tracks and immediately applied the brakes. However, the train was unable to stop in time and struck the cylinder before coming to a halt.
Suspicious Items Recovered from the Scene
Senior officials from the Kanpur Police and the state Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) arrived at the scene to investigate. Alongside the damaged LPG cylinder, police also recovered a bottle of petrol and several matchboxes, raising concerns about potential foul play.
The train remained stationary at the site for about 20 minutes before being moved to Kanpur’s Bilhaur station, where further investigation took place.
Investigation and Detentions
An FIR was registered by the Kanpur Police, and two individuals have been detained for questioning in connection with the incident. The police have also constituted five teams to thoroughly investigate the case.
Police Assure Strict Action
Additional Commissioner of Police Harish Chander confirmed the gravity of the situation, stating, “Railway authorities informed the police that a train hit a gas cylinder. Senior officials and a forensics team are at the spot. We are probing the incident, and strict action will be taken against the accused.”
The authorities are treating the case with urgency, and investigations are ongoing to determine the motive behind placing the items on the tracks.
