The recent box office performance of War 2 has shaken Yash Raj Films (YRF) and forced the studio to rethink its Spy Universe plans. The action-packed film, starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR, was expected to be a blockbuster, but it failed to meet expectations.
War 2 Box Office Performance
War 2 opened on August 14 with a strong Rs 52 crore on its first day, thanks to both the Hindi and Telugu versions. However, the film quickly lost momentum in the following days. By its 12th day, the movie had collected around Rs 224.5 crore in India, and will leave theatres soon while falling short of the Rs 300 crore mark. Despite having major stars, the film could not sustain its initial excitement at the box office.
The decline in collections has raised questions about the film’s storyline and appeal among the Hindi-speaking audience. Many viewers believe the plot failed to engage, which affected word-of-mouth promotions and overall ticket sales.
Jr NTR’s Standalone Film CANCELLED After War 2 Flop?
The disappointing performance of War 2 has reportedly put an end to plans for a standalone film centred on Jr NTR’s character, Agent Vikram. Yash Raj Films had planned to leverage Jr NTR’s Pan-India popularity by developing a spin-off movie focused on the character. However, the film’s underwhelming box office results have forced the studio to pause and eventually cancel these plans.
Industry insiders have confirmed that creating a standalone project for Agent Vikram is no longer a feasible option. The poor performance of War 2 has made the spin-off project financially and creatively unviable. Sources also suggest that YRF head Aditya Chopra personally discussed the situation with Jr NTR. The actor understood the circumstances and agreed to step away from the project, ending the collaboration on amicable terms.
How Netizens Reacted Online
The news of Jr NTR’s standalone film being shelved sparked strong reactions online. Some fans criticised the casting, while others blamed the writing.
Check out some online reactions below:
“The co-hero to Hrithik was a completely wrong casting choice.”
“It was not NTR or any actor’s fault. It was the fault of the writer. Nonsense writing.”
“Ek Ek movie shelved hogi… Maine release k pehele he bolaa thaa #war2
“No hate for Hrithik and NTR, but story storyline is so pathetic.”
“Story achhi nahi hogi to Hindi audience reject kar degi chahe kitana bhi bada Star le lo… mostly NTR ko north me jante bhi nahi hai.”
What’s Next For YRF After War 2?
Despite this setback, YRF is moving forward with its upcoming projects. The studio is preparing for Alpha, starring Alia Bhatt and Sharvari, which is set to release around Christmas 2025. The studio hopes to regain audience attention and deliver another hit, learning from the lessons of War 2.
