New Delhi, July 22, 2025 – The abrupt notification of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar\’s resignation has created shockwaves in the political halls of Delhi. Official sources cited the overall statement of health issues, although senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh expressed concern over the timing, inferring that there is “much more than meets the eye.”
Congress Raises the Alarm
Jairam Ramesh, General Secretary of the Congress, was skeptical about only a day\’s notice from Dhankhar, especially in light of a critical Monsoon session on the horizon. He suggested that it was baffling that Dhankhar ran two Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meetings that same morning and even finalized the agenda for the Monsoon session. Key Union Ministers JP Nadda and Kiren Rijiju were absent from the second meeting and did not alert the Vice President to their absence.
“In light of Dhankhar’s resignation, I think serious questions must be raised about this sequence of events. Clearly, something very serious happened between 1 pm and 4:30 pm.”
“More Than Meets the Eye”
Writing on X, Ramesh said,
“There is no question that Mr. Dhankhar must give full attention to his health. However, it is clear that his wholly unexpected resignation is more than meets the eye.”
He suggested that the Prime Minister himself intervene and ask Dhankhar to reconsider his resignation, as this is, in his view, a matter of “national interest.”
Kapil Sibal, the Independent Rajya Sabha MP and senior advocate, reacted, ’He was one of the most proactive Chairmen of the Rajya Sabha that we have seen over the years… He had a golden heart, a warm, golden heart, and a clear mind, and he was a friend of friends. I’m sorry that he has resigned.’’
Opposition Split on Resignation
The opposition has had a mixed reaction. Many Congress leaders interpreted Dhankhar\’s resignation as a political signal; however, Priyanka Chaturvedi, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP, countered that Dhankhar had shown a bias in his past conduct.
“Let’s not whitewash his clearly partisan behavior in the no-confidence motion.”
She said. However, former Union Minister Kapil Sibal warned against too much speculation and offered Dhankhar empathy if he was resigning due to health-related reasons.
A Political Realignment?
There is significant speculation that the BJP could be facilitating internal shifts ahead of state elections in the near future. The unexpected vacancy of a Vice President right before Parliamentary sessions certainly adds to the fuel of speculation around this issue.
As the country waits for some type of formal response, beyond the health announcement, the political echoes of Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation are already beginning to crescendo.
