New images from NDTV indicate that the Indian Navy's aircraft carrier INS Viraat has been partially destroyed despite plans to convert it into a maritime museum. This picture from Alang in Gujarat concludes an ambitious proposal in which Envitech (a maritime consultancy firm) almost got from Sri Ram Ship Shipbreakers in Alang. 110 million was expected to buy the ship.
It is not clear whether the damage is too much to move the ship. The cost of restoring the part of the ship that has been destroyed is hardly proved.
Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi has written a letter to Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. He wrote requesting, "Immediately intervene to give NOC to preserve INS Viraat. Chaturvedi said that Maharashtra would be happy to revive and preserve this historic warship."
"It is a matter of great sorrow and concern that the work of turning INS Viraat into junk in Alang, Gujarat has been started," he said. The letter from Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi came at a time when an aircraft carrier INS Virat, which was freed from service, was being taken to Alang in Gujarat. The ship breaker company will break this ship warship and turn it into junk.
