SC allows NEET-PG medical counselling with OBC, EWS quotas

The Supreme Court on Friday cleared the decks for postgraduate medical counselling and admissions, including the Other Backward Classes (OBC) and economically weaker sections (EWS) reservations for the current academic year, 2021-22.

The top court has allowed 27 per cent reservation for OBCs and 10 per cent for EWS category in the All-India Quota (AIQ) seats in the NEET-PG exam for admission to medical entrance courses for this year.

A bench of justices DY Chandrachud and AS Bopanna said the validity of the EWS criteria will prospectively be subject to court orders.

The bench said, “We accept the recommendations of the (Ajay Bhushan) Pandey Committee that the EWS criteria, as notified in 2019, should be used for admissions to NEET-PG for the academic session 2021-22.”

Justices Chandrachud and Bopanna said the criteria for determination of EWS category, as notified in January 2019, shall be used for identifying candidates who had appeared for NEET-UG and NEET-PG for academic session 2021-22.
