Space-related talks to dominate Modi’s state visit to the US, say experts

PM Modi Visit US: Prime Minister Narendra Modi starts his 3-day state visit to the US on June 20. While there’s no official word on the agenda to be discussed between him and the US President, various news agencies have offered their individual opinions.

Hindustan Times suggests that the two countries are likely to discuss cooperation in the space sector.

India will launch its Gaganyan mission in 2025, which aims to put three Indian astronautsin the Earth’s orbit. Hindustan Times says that during Modi’s visit to the United States, there will be several agreements between ISRO and NASA regarding the training of the Indian astronaut.

Planetary defence will also be a key negotiating issue between the two countries. The United States has already put a system in space that detects near-earth objects like comets that can collide with the Earth. India is expected to cooperate with the US on this subject.

Both countries are also likely to discuss the various ways and means for the peaceful use of outer space and planets.

Starting with Yoga Day celebrations

Mr. Modi’s travel plans begin with a visit to the UN headquarters where he will participate in the Yoga Day celebrations.

After that, he will travel to Washington, D.C. where he will be formally welcomed by President Joe Biden. The Indian Prime Minister will also address the joint session of the US Congress. This will be the second time Mr Modi will be addressing the Congress.

A high point of his US visit will be the State Dinner in his honour which will be hosted in the south lawns of the White House.

Defence deal

It is likely that the two sides will sign a defence deal regarding GE engines which will be used in Indian fighter aircraft.

After his US visit, the Indian PM will fly to Egypt for a meeting with President Sisi.
