Union Health Ministry derecognizes 40 medical colleges.

Medical Colleges: National Medical Commission (NMC) has derecognized 40 medical colleges for having inadequate faculty. These colleges also didn’t have critical infrastructure like biometrics for tracking attendance and CCTV cameras.
Another 100 medical colleges are also under the scanner of NMC. These colleges may also lose their licences if NMC finds they are violating its rules.


What is National Medical Commission?


NMC regulates medical education and research in India. This organization was set up through the National Medical Commission Act of 2020 and aims to provide quality medical education at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
The other aims of NMC are to “(i) improve access to quality and affordable medical education and ensure availability of adequate and high-quality medical professionals in all parts of the country, (iii) promote equitable and universal healthcare that encourages community health perspective and makes services of medical professionals accessible to all the citizens; (iv) encourage doctors to adopt latest medical research in their work and to contribute to research; (v) objectively assess medical institutions periodically in a transparent manner; (vi) maintain a medical register for India; (vi) enforce high ethical standards in all aspects of medical services and lastly, have an effective grievance redressal mechanism.” (NMC website)

“We want to improve the quality of medical education”


Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has been warning all the medical colleges in India to adhere to rules and regulations or risk being derecognized. His warnings have now come true and 40 medical colleges have now lost their licences.
These colleges are located in Assam, Gujarat, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
Prime Minister Modi has brought in several reforms in the health sector. His government has introduced the Ayushman Yojana which aims to provide basic health coverage to the less privileged sections of the society.
