Early Tuesday morning, a section of a bridge near Mujpur village in Padra taluka, Vadodara district, collapsed. At least four cars fell into the Mahi River. According to the first accounts from local authorities, the accident killed three people and hurt three others.
The Health Minister of Gujarat, Rushikesh Patel, said that the Gambhira Bridge was built in 1985, had been through "periodic maintenance as and when required." He also said that "the exact reason behind the incident will be probed."
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel ordered an investigation right away and laid out steps to help. He said that each victim who died would get ₹4 lakh in free money, and those who were hurt would get ₹50,000.
The over-40-year-old bridge that gave way linked Vadodara and Anand, two important districts, to a state highway. The bridge was an important route for thousands of workers and people taking public transport.
Vehicles Hurt and People Hurt
Witnesses and first rescuers say that a truck and a Mahindra Bolero SUV were among the cars that fell into the river when the bridge suddenly gave way. At least four cars were involved in the accident. Divers and units of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were sent to the scene right away to look for people and save them.
Rescue efforts helped get some survivors to safety, but at least three people have been declared dead and at least three others have been hurt. The authorities are still searching because they think more victims may be stuck underwater.
Problems with traffic and alternative routes
Because of what happened, there is no longer any big connection between Vadodara and Anand districts. People taking public transit and big trucks that use the bridge now have to take different routes. The government has told people to use different state and district roads instead.
Transport officials are looking at nearby minor roads and bridges to see how they can handle traffic that needs to be rerouted until a temporary structure or bypass is built.
Why did this accident happen
Early investigations show that structural fatigue and a lack of regular maintenance may have played a role in the collapse. People say the bridge was built more than 40 years ago and sees a lot of traffic every day. Long-term neglect is thought to have played a part by experts, but an official investigation is still going on.
What the public thought and what will happen next
A lot of people are worried about the safety of facilities in Gujarat after what happened. People in the area and leaders of the opposition have asked for an audit of all of the state's old bridges. After the probe, the government has promised quick repairs and that people will be held accountable.
