Nepal Flood Viral Video:As Nepal struggles with one of its worst natural calamities in years, a shocking video has emerged showing two men taking jewellery from the body of a woman pulled from floodwaters, sparking widespread anger and a prompt police response.

What the video depicts

In a 41-second video, two men can be seen pulling a woman’s body out of the water with wooden planks, which were washed away by the Narayani River. According to reports, the men are seen using the hair of the dead woman to pull her body closer to them before pulling earrings from her ears as bystanders close to the scene filmed the incident. The footage quickly went viral on social media, with users condemning the act as a disturbing breakdown of basic humanity.

Police Confirm Detentions

Nepal Police said the incident took place in Chitwan district and the body was swept away in the Narayani River due to flooding. The accused have been identified as Madan Gurung, 25, and Umesh Chaudhary, 38. They were later arrested near Pokhara Bus Park in Bharatpur Metropolitan City. The police arrested the men for stealing earrings from the dead woman and said they had started legal proceedings against them. Officials condemned the act as inhumane and said there would be zero tolerance for disrespecting victims of disasters or their bodies.

The Growing Disaster’s Setting

Nepal Flood Viral Video: The incident came as Nepal was hit by devastating flash floods on Aug. 26 that killed at least 175 people and left nearly 800 missing, according to the latest figures. The Nepal Tourism Board has also issued updated lists with hundreds of tourists and travellers unaccounted for, including citizens from 33 countries, with Indian nationals forming the largest share of missing tourists.
