Deputy Speaker of Karnataka Legislative Council commits suicide

He also did not inform his security team before moving out of his home along with his driver.

Karnataka Legislative Council Deputy Chairman SL Dharmegowda was found dead on a railway track near Kadur of Chikkamagaluru in Karnataka on Tuesday morning. A suicide note was also recovered along with the body.

The police suspect that he may have committed suicide by coming by jumping in front of a moving train in Gunasagar in Kadur late on Monday. He had left his home alone on Monday evening around 7 PM in his Santro car. 

He also did not inform his security team before moving out of his home along with his driver. 

He had reportedly asked his driver to stay at a distance and went alone on the pretext of talking to someone, the sources said, adding that a suicide note has been recovered.

When he did not return till 10 PM, a search was initiated to trace him. Gowda’s body was later found lying on the railway track. It has also come to light that the Janta Dal (S) leader had asked his driver to leave the place and then inquired about the train movement at that time.

The body has been shifted to the McGann Hospital in Shivamogga, official sources said.

Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa has expressed shock over the incident, terming it “unfortunate”. He has lauded the MLC for efficiently conducting the legislative council as its deputy chairman.

Expressing grief, JD(S) patriarch and former prime minister H D Deve Gowda, in a tweet, remembered him as a gentleman politician. His death is a loss to the state, he added. His son and

JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy said Dharmegowda was like a brother to him. “His death has caused a shock to me. He was an upright politician,” said the and former chief minister.

It may be recalled that recently, there was a lot of uproar in the Karnataka Legislative Council and there was a scuffle among the members. During this time, Congress members misbehaved with Deputy Speaker SL Dharmegowda and had forcibly removed him from the chair. They had alleged that he is sitting in the chair illegally.

He also did not inform his security team before moving out of his home along with his driver.  Gowda, 64, who was an MLC from JD(S), is survived by his wife, son and a daughter. His brother, S L Bhoje Gowda, is also an MLC.
