Viral Video: A vigilant individual foiled a recent scam attempt when he dodged a sophisticated UPI fraud scheme. The incident, caught on video and shared on X, formerly Twitter, highlights how scammers’ tactics are evolving.
Scammer’s Deceptive Proposal
It all started with a call from the scamster who tried to convince the man that he had to make a UPI payment of Rs 8,999 for verification of his account. The scamster guaranteed that immediately after he had made the transaction, the amount would be credited back to his account. On following the instructions of the scamster, the man ended up on the page where he had to enter the UPI pin.
He sensed the red flags and asked why he had to enter his UPI pin. To which this scamster gave some dubious explanation that this step was necessary for verification. In his desperation to push the man into entering his PIN, the desperate scamster told him that in case the money got debited, he could file a complaint.
Man Questions the Need for a UPI PIN
He knew he was being conned and pressed the scammer on his fake 15-digit phone number. Obviously thrown off his game, the scammer first said that his number was untraceable and he was using a voice assistant. When the man let him know that he was recording the call, and that he was going to share it publicly, the scammer went to threats, claiming he would hack the man’s phone.
The video, shot on August 6, had gone viral with almost five lakh views and over 6,400 likes. It generated a deluge of comments in which viewers shared their opinion and experience about such frauds. The incident serves to raise awareness regarding the need for being vigilant and skeptical when one comes across any unexpected financial transaction.
