Viral Video: At Gujarat's Vapi station on Tuesday, an elderly man was about to be crushed by a train when an elderly man showed courage and a strong sense of duty and intervened. The bold action was caught on camera by the station's CCTV system.
In the video, multiple individuals can be seen crossing railway tracks to get from one platform to another. This is an extremely risky but widespread practise across the nation. An individual is observed battling to board the platform, and a guard from the Government Railway Police (GRP) assists them. Around 6 o'clock at night, the Surat-Bandra Terminus Intercity train is pulling into the station when an old man is seen stepping across the tracks. The old man trips and falls between the tracks as the train draws near.
The elderly man is seen being rushed by the GRP personnel as they leap off the platform. He grabs the man and pulls him away from the tracks when the train is only a few metres away. The train passes by and a tragedy is averted. After putting his life in danger to save the elderly passenger, GRP employee Veerabhai Meru assisted him in returning to the platform.
The Railways have not succeeded in curbing the practise, even in the face of fines and repeated guidelines cautioning people against crossing tracks. To save a few minutes, passengers—including women and children—often choose this risky route. In the last few years, security staff and bystanders have risked their lives to save passengers who have tripped in front of oncoming trains, as captured by CCTV cameras placed at stations.
