Viral Video: On Friday, while heading to an event in Pune, journalist Nikhil Wagle's car was allegedly attacked by BJP workers. Videos showed the BJP workers mobbing the automobile and throwing ink on it, breaking the windscreen and side panes.
Controversial Remarks on Bharat Ratna
Following the ruling party patriarch's receipt of the Bharat Ratna, Wagle made remarks disparaging Prime Minister Narendra Modi and LK Advani. These remarks sparked protests from BJP workers. After the event, there was a brief scuffle between BJP activists and workers of the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) until the police intervened.
Forgiving the Attackers
Wagle made his address at the location later, stating, "I forgive all those who attacked me. I have been attacked six times earlier and this was the seventh." "From Shivaji Maharaj to Shahuji Maharaj to Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, everything is our tradition. We have a tradition of saints," he said.
In addition, Wagle urged the crowd to support MVA in the next Maharashtra elections. BJP leader Sunil Deodhar filed a complaint against Wagle earlier in the day for allegedly uttering derogatory remarks about Advani and the PM.
Nikhil Wagle Booked Under Multiple Sections of the IPC
"Nikhil Wagle has been booked under sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups), 500 (defamation) and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Vishrambaug police station. We are probing the matter further," news agency PTI reported.
Sharad Pawar-led NCP group leader Supriya Sule responded to the incident by saying, "Strongly condemn the attack on Nikhil Wagle, a voice of truth and a beacon of journalism. This is not just an assault on an individual but an attack on freedom of speech itself. The deteriorating law and order situation in Maharashtra under the BJP regime that is tacitly enabling such acts is alarming and warrants strictest accountability."
