Viral Video: Four students have been suspended from an engineering college in Mangaluru, Karnataka, after a video of them dancing while wearing burqas to a Hindi song went viral on social media.
They can be seen in the video participating in an activity that the St. Joseph Engineering College students’ association has planned. The dance was not a part of the authorised programme, according to a statement from the college administration.
Video went viral
According to the college, “the video clip being shared on social media has captured a part of the dance by students from the Muslim community who barged on stage.” “The college does not endorse or support any activities that might undermine community cohesion or the welfare of all parties.”
Protests were staged by the students in other regions of Karnataka
When a group of Muslim students at the Government Women’s Pre-University College in Udupi city were denied access to classes because they were wearing the hijab in December of last year, a commotion broke out in the southern state. Similar protests were staged by the students in other regions of Karnataka.
Male mobs and Hindu students demonstrated against Muslim women attending educational institutions while donning hijabs. In some colleges, Muslim students were taunted, while in another instance, some men broke into classrooms after climbing a flagpole to plant a saffron flag.
