Viral Video: A brief but impactful video making the rounds on X (formerly Twitter) depicts passengers entering a packed commuter train. In it, a female passenger appears to hold onto the train doorway and a male passenger appears to help them do so. He then engages in what appears to be a sexually inappropriate manner in front of many people.
Public Reaction and Netizen Outrage
Social media users reacted to this post almost instantly. Many accused the actions of the male passenger as sexual harassment and there were calls for consequences. Others feel that because of the hustle and bustle associated with boarding a busy train there may have been no intention of the male passenger to cause the female passenger to feel uncomfortable and that there could have been an innocent explanation for the touching incident. The video generated multiple hashtags calling for safer travel for commuters as well as clearer guidelines for consent in these types of situations.

Women’s Harassment on Public Transport
According to advocates, this video shows a larger and ongoing problem: women are subjected to verbal harassment and physical harassment while traveling every day. Survivors and non-governmental organisations often say that there is very little reporting of these types of incidents, a lack of safe places to go, and a long-term psychological impact due to having that experience over and over again. Netizens are asking that crowd management be improved, a public awareness campaign be run, and that there be better access to complaint mechanisms to ensure commuter safety for women.
Why This Matters: Safety and Consent
The issue also raises two frequently cited problems: train commuter safety when trains are overcrowded and clearly defining when a person is being helped and when a person is being assaulted. Experts and activists have called for a strengthened focus on preventative measures, training for bystanders on intervening when they witness an act of harassment, and safety initiatives aimed at women.
