India asks Canada to prevent the Khalistan referendum on November 6

This week, India asked Canada to halt the referendum on Khalistan scheduled for November 6. The referendum is being organised by the banned Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) group. A senior Canadian High Commission official was told by a senior foreign ministry official that the decision would jeopardise India’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, according to media sources cited by Sputnik. The following week, the Indian Embassy in Canada would likewise raise the matter with Global Affairs Canada.

Notably, the first referendum took place in Brampton on September 19. It would be “unfortunate,” according to Arindam Bagchi, a spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, if unfavourable events were permitted on October 22 in a friendly nation. He asserted that India had voiced concerns to the Canadian government at several levels. Bagchi emphasised at a press conference that India believes similar operations won’t take place in Canada. He continued by mentioning a warning issued by the Ministry of External Affairs regarding the rise in anti-Indian incidents in Canada and the threat they pose to Indians. Bagchi emphasised the need of keeping the Kanishka bombing in mind as well as the likelihood that subsequent incidents could be linked to the explosions.

Selon Arindam Bagchi, “It is quite regrettable that such activities are permitted in a friendly nation. We clearly communicated various levels to the Canadian government. We have also released a warning about how anti-Indian activity is growing in that country and how much risk there may be for us Indians in such things, since we do not anticipate such developments or such activities” he added.
