Viral Video: Recently, a very ordinary video of a girl displaying tattoos of gods of Hinduism on her body went viral and caused an online ruckus and debate. Tattooing was originally more of a foreign trend, but today it is quite rampant in India. Being tattooed is a personal choice, but the design that some people choose can create extreme reactions in the public, especially if it relates to religion.
Girl’s Religious Tattoos Spark Outrage on Social Media
A viral video uploaded to Instagram by the handle “mauryavandana431” on 12 September reveals the girl in a confident pose with tattoos of Gods like Lord Ganesha, Hanuman, and Lord Shiva. She was seen sporting a backless blouse with religious tattoos splashed across her arms and back while attending a public function.
It is quite similar to the situation of the protests in France: Many have taken offense from this, terming it an insult to Sanatan Dharma and seeking a legal action against the girl. For instance, the caption of the video is, “People nowadays do anything.” Such reactions signify distaste from many viewers. Some comments under the video scream disgust, call for the arrest of the girl, and even claim that the girl’s acts disrespect Hinduism.
Calls for Police Action Over Religious Tattoos
One user claimed, “Police action should be taken against this girl,” while others simply said the girl disrespect some sacred symbols. The reaction really does reflect the conflict between the right to personal freedom of expression and the respect for religious belief: certainly, most users were inquiring which side the line falls.
This incident throws up the debate at the horizon, How would the modern expressions of individuality impress the cultural and religious sensitivities of the nation, particular when the country itself is as religiously diversified as India?.
