A viral video revealing the demolished state of Oscar-winning filmmaker Satyajit Ray's ancestral home in Mymensingh, Bangladesh, has triggered nationwide outrage. The historic residence had been left to decay for years, but its sudden demolition has shocked many.
Authorities reportedly cleared the site to allocate the land for the Mymensingh Shishu Academy, a move that is now being seen as a severe blow to Bengali heritage and India's cultural pride. From the Ministry of External Affairs to political parties like the TMC and BJP, widespread concerns are being raised over the loss captured in the viral video.
The viral video shows the poor, dismantled condition of the ancestral home of the legendary Satyajit Ray in Bangladesh. The in-charge of BJP's National Information & Technology Dept. Mr Amit Malviya shares the disheartening footage on his official X handle to raise nationwide awareness.

This isn’t just the destruction of an old structure — it is the erasure of history itself.
The very soil that nurtured one of the world’s greatest cinematic legends is now reduced to… pic.twitter.com/kr4WgEqQe4
But now, it is witnessing the synchronised oppression against the Hindu Bengali infrastructure in Bangladesh. In agony, Amit Malviya wrote, "This house was not just bricks and mortar. It was a symbol of heritage, memory, and pride — not just for Bengal or India, but for the entire world". He openly shames the Bangladesh government for not protecting such heritage sites. Malviya even suspects it to be a thoughtful abolition to eliminate history from its roots by some fascist, anti-Bengali mindset.
This shocking news deeply impacts the sentiments of Bengalis and Indians alike. Satyajit Ray, one of the most iconic figures in Indian cinema and literature, holds a place of great respect across generations. The viral video showing his ancestral home reduced to rubble has triggered widespread outrage.
Voicing their anger, people asserted, "Heritage isn't just history it's identity. Preserving it is a duty, not a choice." Some even saw it as a political provocation, with one user remarking, "I think it's getting out of hand. Bangladesh needs to be taught a lesson or two. Blockade of Bangladeshi ports by Indian Navy can be a start."
As emotions run high, the incident has reignited conversations on cross-border cultural sensitivity, and the urgent need to safeguard shared legacies before they're lost forever.
This demolition is symptomatic of a broader disregard for Bengali cultural identity. If such disrespect is offered to the most prominent figure of the Bengali culture and literature, then what will happen to the rest? The Ministry of External Affairs and West Bengal's CM, Mamata Banerjee, expressed their regret for the heartbreaking incident.
The demand for reestablishing the house is surging. The Bangladeshi official told the media that their plan is to make a semi-concrete building on that site to resume the Mymensingh Shishu Academy there.
