An alarming video that went viral on social media recently has sparked the free flow of opinions on social media, as a shocking incident on IndiGo was captured on camera. The video records a passenger with a beard who is having a panic attack; he is upset and cannot control his breathing or movements. Instead of getting some form of support or medical attention, the man was, however, slapped by a fellow passenger, and this appears to be out of frustration.

This man with the panic attack did not pose any danger whatsoever to other people, but the aggressive reaction of a fellow traveller, who received a sudden hit in the face, shocked the citizens of the country. Professionals and mental health advocates are speaking up and clarifying that panic attacks are not to be faced with confrontation but with compassion. The act of delay in intervention by the flight crew has also been raised as a question about the sensitivity training of passengers and readiness for emergencies in commercial flights.
The names of the passengers on board are still unconfirmed, but the video has already caused demands for it and legal recourse, as well as accountability of the airlines.
It seems that society is divided, as the comments under the video show. Although there was a reason why some users believed the slap was necessary due to a need to control chaos, it was noted that the greatest majority was rooted in the loss of empathy in civil places. People claim that mental conditions are not well understood in India. As answered above, panic attacks are interpreted as drama or overreacting. This event has drawn more attention to debates on mental health awareness, particularly in stressful situations such as flights.
This has posed serious concerns regarding how airlines prepare staff and passengers for ways of dealing with emotive crises. As the problem of travel anxiety and panic attacks rises, the specialists believe that such travelling scenarios should be equipped with mental health first-aid procedures on board planes. Indigo has not given out any official statement, but people are demanding one.
